Nathan Olson and Kristen Kugel attended the Fairfax Bar Association Family Law Section meeting on Monday, April 13, 2015. This month’s meeting included a discussion of the recent Fairfax County Circuit Court case of Rieger v. Rieger and a Recap of the 2015 Legislative Session. The Rieger case reviewed the concept of “phantom income” and what should be included as a party’s gross income for purposes of child support calculations. The review of the case produced a lively discussion between the attorneys present regarding what should and should not be included as income for calculation of child support. The 2015 General Assembly Session also produced a few changes for family law, including making it easier to obtain a divorce by Affidavit and revising the way health insurance costs for a child are calculated.
