Every day, we are faced with the underwritten rule of being “ok”. Walking into work, someone asks, “how are you?” The most common response is “good”. But it is ok to not feel ok. May is Mental Health Awareness month.
The Importance of Mental Health in Divorce
Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. Divorce is a major life stressor that can take a toll on your mental well-being. Pay attention to how you are feeling and how you are coping with this significant stressor. Some people externalize their feelings (for example, they are easily agitated or irritable). Others internalize their feels (for example, they engage in emotional eating or experience bodily aches/pains).
How to Stay Mentally Healthy During a Divorce
However stress manifests, it is important to carve out some time to recharge yourself. Stay true to yourself. Know your truth. If the truth is that you need help, then ask for it. If you need support – ask. If you need a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on – ask. If you need a referral for a therapist or someone to talk to, please contact CGG’s divorce coach, Dr. Leah Nathan. Make your mental health a priority. It is a necessity not a luxury.
