Kristen Kugel recently attended the 22nd Annual Newly Admitted Attorney Orientation put on by the Fairfax Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section.
The half day of training included a tour of the courthouse and presentations by the Judges of the Fairfax Circuit, General District, and Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court. The CLE also had representatives from each Clerk’s office and representatives from the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Department discuss their role in the Fairfax court system.
Ms. Kugel notes the most memorable part of the day was the presentation by The Honorable R. Terrence Ney of the Fairfax County Circuit Court entitled, Always Know Where to Sit and Stand: Tips for Young Trial Lawyers. Judge Ney presented ten tips, which included the basic essentials, to looking like you know your way around a courtroom. Judge Ney noted that while many of these tips seem elementary, like always properly introducing yourself and always standing when speaking, many seasoned attorneys forget to do these simple things. Although every Judge has their own style in the courtroom, by always following these fundamentals, a new attorney can be confident when walking into any courtroom.
