Jamie Shaw

My interest in family law began in my second year of law school after I had the privilege of taking a Virginia-specific family law class taught by two partners at Cooper Ginsberg Gray, Ms. Stephanie J. Smith and Mr. Nathan J. Olson. After learning about the process of divorce and custody and the impact that an attorney can have on a client and their family, I immediately knew that I wanted to dedicate my legal career to family law.

Originally from New Jersey, I came to Virginia to obtain my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Minor in Criminal Justice from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. While there, I interned at Blue Ridge Legal Services, a non-profit legal aid society that provided free civil legal assistance to low-income residents of the Shenandoah Valley and Roanoke Valley of Virginia. Before attending law school, I continued my interest in helping others and worked as a Legal Assistant at a law firm that specialized in national affordable housing transactions.

I attended George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School in Arlington, Virginia where I served as a Managing Editor of the Civil Rights Law Journal. While at George Mason, I was a judicial intern at the Arlington Circuit Court where I gained invaluable experience from observing trials and motions from behind the bench. I also interned at the Federal Public Defenders in Alexandria, Virginia, where I assisted indigent clients charged with federal offenses.

I first joined Cooper Ginsberg Gray as an intern during my second year of law school and became an Associate Attorney in September 2024.

Navigating family law matters can be overwhelming, but I am here to guide you through the process with care and compassion. I take the time to listen closely to my clients, paying attention to every detail to understand their unique needs and concerns. This allows me to provide compassionate, personalized representation that puts your family’s best interests first. My practice is grounded in respect, empathy, and a commitment to fostering a safe space for both you and your loved ones.

I believe the most important qualities for a family law attorney are empathy, strong advocacy, and a flexible approach. I work closely with my clients to assess their options and help them make informed decisions that will serve them and their families both in the short and long term. While settlement is typically the preferred solution, I understand that litigation may be necessary in certain situations. In those cases, I am fully prepared to advocate for you in the courtroom and bring a strong presence to ensure my clients’ voices are heard and their rights are protected. My goal is always to provide a sense of clarity and confidence, no matter how complex the situation may seem.
